Wostenholm is one of the foundational names in English cutlery. The family had been making knives in the villages outside Sheffield since the mid-1700s — George Wolstenholme, born in 1717, is the earliest known cutler in the line — and shortened the name to Wostenholm around 1815. In 1826, a third-generation George Wostenholm registered the IXL trademark, a phonetic play on "I excel," and went on to build the firm into one of the largest cutlers in Sheffield during the city's 19th-century dominance of the global cutlery trade. At its peak in the 1850s the company employed over 800 craftsmen, and IXL knives became as familiar in American hardware stores as in British ones.
