A quietly radical building, The Tane Garden House recalibrates the expectation of what new construction can be: modest in footprint, ancient in method, attentive to place. This little volume is a vibrant documentation of an architectural process, and the materials that went into it (stone, wood, rope, thatch).

The latest addition to the Vitra Design Museum campus in Weil am Rhein, and the first on that campus designed with the climate crisis in mind, the Garden House was designed by Japanese architect Tsuyoshi Tane. This book moves through the project as a lively collage of statements, drawings, photographs, and prototypes. To eliminate the environmental harms of modern construction, Tane built only with above-ground materials and engaged local craftsmen on site. An approach as much philosophical as practical.

Edited by Rolf Fehlbaum, with text by Tsuyoshi Tane and Andreas Kofler. Published in 2024 by Vitra Design Museum. 304 pages, paperback, with 200 color and 400 black-and-white illustrations.
